Scott Rivas of Jackman, a senior at Forest Hills High School, has been selected to receive the 2010 Principal's Award, Principal Denise Plante announced today.  The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals' Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior's academic achievement and citizenship.

Scott was chosen for his pursuit of very high academic and artistic study.  Throughout his years at Forest Hills School, Scott has chosen the most rigorous and challenging coursework.  Scott is a very accomplished writer and an avid reader.   Most recently, he has demonstrated his gifted artistic talents by learning to play the violin and performing at a school concert after only a few weeks of instruction.
Scott Rivas and his principal and other award winners and their principals will attend an Honors Luncheon at the Spectacular Event Center in Bangor on Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 1:00 p.m.

The Honors Luncheon recognizes these outstanding students with the presentation of an individual plaque and the awarding of five $1,000 scholarships in the names of Horace O. McGowan and Richard W. Tyler.  Mr. McGowan and Mr. Tyler were former Maine principals and executive directors of the Association.

The Principal's Award is presented in more than 140 Maine public and private high schools by member principals of the MPA, the professional association which represents Maine's school administrators.

Grades K-3 will be celebrating Read Across America Day on Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010.  The National Education Association is repeating this literary event in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday.  The idea behind this event is to encourage every child in every school in every community to be in the company of a book on that day.

In order to make you feel a part of this important day, you are welcome to come in to school on that Tuesday to read to your child and perhaps other classmates.  Kindergarten, First, Second, and Third Grade parents, family members, or friends are invited in from 10:15 to 10:45.  Teachers will have plenty of wonderful book selections available and will designate places and small groupings to everyone who wants to be a part of this event.  We know that your child would love to have someone in their family be involved.

We are asking that each student bring from home a favorite read-aloud book to share with the class on that day.  Children will be expected to give a very short book talk on why this particular book is a favorite.  Children have also been told that they are welcome to bring in a stuffed animal or stuffed playmate to read with, and may also wear pajamas to school that day for fun.

We urge you to become involved on Tuesday, March 2nd, in order to make this a memorable celebration of reading.  Please contact your child’s teacher with any questions you may have.

Eighth grader Kori Coro was watching the news with her grandfather witnessing the terrible devastation taking place in Haiti.  She wanted to do something.  As a result, she turned to her eighth grade class and for the past two weeks they have raised over $1,600.  Their goal is to raise $5,000 to give to Pam and Luke Brochu, formerly of Jackman, who work with an orphanage in Haiti.  Every penny donated will go directly to the children.  The Brochu's are currently in Haiti offering their help.  Mr. and Mrs. Brochu will join the eighth graders later in the year to share their experiences in Haiti.

The eighth graders have many fundraisers planned and have had lots of support from local businesses including Four Seasons, Mountain Country Supermarket, Bishop's Store, Mike St. Peter Safety Services, and Associated Grocers of New England.  They are currently offering "Jackman to Haiti" orange wristbands for a minimum $2 donation.

If you would like to help the eighth graders, donations are being accepted at the school.  Checks should be written to the Forest Hills Class of 2014/Haiti.  For more information, contact the school at 668-5291.
